Michael Downing is an acclaimed director, with work that has been recognized by the Cannes Lions, The One Show and screened at top festivals including the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
Michael was born in San Francisco and raised in Toronto, where he studied fine art, acting, and theater directing before launching his own experimental theater company. His two early short films – “Clean-Rite Cowboy” and “Why Don’t You Dance?” – were screened at TIFF and nominated for Genies (Canadian Oscars), and led to a scholarship to the American Film Institute (AFI). Leaving his mother’s basement for Los Angeles, Michael’s tenure at AFI ultimately led to short film “Fine,” which won a student Academy Award and was screened on Independent Lens. After graduating from AFI, Michael launched his commercial directing career with “Boardroom” for Science World, which earned a bronze lion at Cannes and a pencil at The One Show. His “Sky Diver” spot for Bud Light aired during Super Bowl XXXIX and remains one of the top twenty Super Bowl spots of all time. Over the years he has also created memorable work for ESPN, Toyota, Netflix, Samsung, Wal-Mart, and many others.
Michael is currently based in Los Angeles and represented by Biscuit Filmworks in the U.S.
